A different road

Taking a different road

If I’d kept on going the way I was I might not have made it to year 11. I’d probably have been excluded or at least got very bad GCSE grades.”

Jaafar was in year 10 at a school in West London when he did a Grit programme as part of a project with the Harrow Club, a network of youth clubs in west London. Read his story here.

Staff Posting

In the last newsletter we talked about how many of our student participants post about Grit on social media. But it’s not just students. Sometimes, we hear from staff too.

Check out Miu-Lee reporting on the 1-day workshop we ran for Business School students at the University of Westminster. She writes about students “delving into essence of perseverance to identifying individual strengths and opportunities, students gleaned invaluable insights and actionable takeaways applicable to both academic and personal spheres.”

And then there’s Kevin who did a training for staff supporting students of Black Heritage at the University of Manchester. He describes “one of the best workshops I have ever attended, filled with enlightening discussions, shared experiences and empowering stories.”

So, if you’re someone who has taken part in a Grit programme, get posting!

The Power of Coaching

We’re thrilled that our CEO, Ellie Garraway, is featured among the first webinars on HE Professional – ‘the home of practice and innovation for the higher education sector.’

She talks at length about the coaching methodology that underpins so much of what we do. What is coaching really and why is it useful when working with students? Is coaching a mindset or just a set of tools? What does it mean to REALLY listen? And which questions work best and why?

Listen in here.

Please note, you’ll need to subscribe to HE Professional to access the webinar.

"My voice is important."

And, finally, this month we end with one of our latest films – students at Nottingham Trent University students describing the impact of the Grit programme.

As one students puts it, "I'm achieving more through my confidence in being me and being true to myself and my values. That has enabled me to make more friends."
